The Legal Service was created as a part of the Directorate Services Unit at the request of CERN's Member States, in order to protect the legal interests of the Organization and to ensure that the activities and decisions of the Organization conform with the applicable rules. As CERN is an intergovernmental organization, the regulations applicable to its operation belong to a particular legal framework, that of international law. The Legal Service thus takes on the duty of " guardian of the international treaties " and acts as a consultant to the Organization, the Directorate and its services in legal matters.
