Biographical history

Werner Beusch (1930-2024) was a Swiss physicist who worked on the OMEGA project at CERN from the late 1960s until his retirement in 1995, just before the OMEGA spectrometer was decommissioned. The project was a group of physicist and engineer called the “Omega Project Working Group”. He was one of Paul Scherrer's students at ETH Zürich, he obtained his PhD in 1960 with a thesis on “Two photon transitions in barium-137”. He died in 2024.

Scope and content

The files of Werner Beusch contain a wide variety of documents from his scientific career at CERN. He mainly worked on the OMEGA Spectrometer at CERN from the 1960s to his retirement in 1995.

The documents contain a variety of materials from 1947 to 2015, which includes some non-CERN and CERN scientific publications, Beusch's publications, correspondence, handwritten notes, administrative documents, conferences, photographs, films, slides and reference materials. The languages most used in the documents are German, English and French, with one publication in Greek.

What mainly constitutes the collection are the handwritten notes that we found in his possession, which are unique. These include scientific calculations, experimental data calculations, graphs/charts and research notes. It also contains correspondence with colleague, including Jean-Pierre Blaser and with institution including ETH Zürich about Beusch's work.

The collection also contains slides, photographs and films documenting CERN from an aerial point of view, laboratory, charts, scientific presentations and on the OMEGA Spectrometer particle events recorded.

    Historical note on the CERN OMEGA Spectrometer project

    The OMEGA Spectrometer was a cornerstone of particle physics research at CERN. Its name is an acronym for “Optimal Magnetic Electronic General Apparatus”. The project was first proposed in 1968 by a group of scientists called the “Omega Project Working Group”. Their vision was to evolve the concepts of the "Wilson Chamber" into a high-tech electronic detection system. They began operation in 1972 under the guidance of the original 1968 group.

    The facility utilized a massive superconducting magnet and spark chambers to track and analysed the movement of particles. Werner Beusch was important in the project’s development and is specifically credited with designing the “trigger” system. The electronic component that signalled the spectrometer to record specific particle events.

    After 25 years of service, it was decommissioned in 1996. Its shutdown was a strategic move to make space for a new project. Known as today, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s most powerful particle accelerator. Despite the closure, it was an accomplishment for CERN.

    Cloud Chamber / Spark Chamber

    The Cloud Chamber was invented in 1911 by a Scottish physicist Charles Thomson Rees Wilson.

    It serves as a particle detector for ionizing radiation by utilizing a sealed environment containing a supersaturated vapor of water or alcohol. When a charged particle enters the chamber, it interacts with the gas molecules, knocking off electrons via electrostatic forces. This process leaves a trail of the particle trajectory.

    Spark Chamber

    The spark chamber is another type of detector that visualizes the paths of subatomic particles, but it operates using high-voltage electricity rather than vapor. It consists of a stack of metal plates immersed in an inert gas, such as neon. When a charged particle, such as a cosmic ray, passes through the plates, it leaves a trail of ions that triggers a series of bright, visible sparks along its path.
